Repointing Melbourne — brick mortar repair specialists.

The basics

What is repointing?

Repointing is the process of raking out failed or deteriorated mortar from between bricks and replacing it with fresh, properly-mixed mortar. It's the single most important piece of maintenance any brick home will ever need — and Melbourne's mix of dry summers, wet winters and salt-laden bay air makes it essential.

Done well, repointing restores the structural integrity of the wall, stops water entry, prevents brick movement, and extends the life of your brickwork by decades.

Diagnostic

Signs your brickwork needs repointing.

If you can see any of these on your home, the mortar is past its useful life. Left alone, the problems compound — water gets in, bricks shift, internal damp starts.

  • Crumbling or missing mortar between bricks
  • Visible cracks or gaps in the mortar joints
  • Damp patches inside the home near external walls
  • Mortar that crumbles to dust when pressed with a finger
  • Brick movement, sagging, or stepped cracking
  • Efflorescence (white salt deposits) on brickwork
Education

Why mortar fails in Melbourne.

Melbourne weather is brutal on mortar. Dry summers shrink it, wet winters soak it, and the freeze-thaw cycles in the cooler months expand microcracks until joints fail. Salt-laden air from the bay accelerates the process on south-facing walls.

On heritage homes the problem compounds: original lime-based mortars are often softer than modern cement mortars, but they were designed that way intentionally — to absorb building movement and let the brick breathe. When old jobs are repointed with the wrong mix, the bricks themselves start to crack instead of the mortar. Period-correct mortar matters.

Repointing vs tuckpointing — which do you need?

Repointing is structural maintenance. Tuckpointing is the decorative heritage finish. Most period homes need repointing as the foundation work; some also benefit from a tuckpointed finish over the top. We'll assess and recommend.
