Tuckpointing Melbourne — heritage brickwork specialists.

The craft

What is tuckpointing?

Tuckpointing is a specialist decorative finish developed for heritage brickwork. A coloured base mortar is applied to match the surrounding brick, then a fine contrasting line — traditionally lime putty drawn with Botany sand — is laid over the top. The result is the appearance of crisp, precise, almost ruler-straight joints across the entire facade.

It's the finish you see on the best-preserved Victorian terraces in Carlton, the freshly restored Bungalows of Camberwell, and the Federation homes of Hawthorn. Done well, tuckpointing transforms a tired heritage facade into something that stops people on the street.

The process

How we tuckpoint a heritage home.

01

Assessment & colour matching

We inspect every joint and match the original mortar colour using period-correct pigments — critical for a heritage-correct result.

02

Joint preparation

Existing mortar is carefully raked back to 10–15mm, exposing clean brick edges without damage to the surrounding masonry.

03

Self-coloured mortar bed

A coloured mortar matched to your brick is packed into every joint as the base layer.

04

Lime putty & Botany sand lining

A fine contrasting line of lime putty and Botany sand is drawn over the bed — the signature crisp tuckpointed line.

05

Final finish & site clean

Joints finished, scaffold dropped, site left immaculate. We treat your home like it's our own.

Need repointing instead?

Tuckpointing vs repointing — which do you need?

Repointing is the underlying mortar repair — essential maintenance that restores structural integrity. Tuckpointing is the decorative finish layered over the top. Many heritage jobs need both. If you're unsure, we'll assess on-site and recommend what your home actually needs.
